Beautiful official documentary in Japanese of Nichiren Daishonin’s life (1222-1282), the
True Buddha of Kuon Ganjo, and the Second High Priest Byakuren Ajari Nikko
Shonin (1246-1333) who protected and led Nichiren Shoshu. In the documentary,
it is explained the main events of Nichiren Daishonin’s life including
historical works like the Rissho Ankoku Ron (1260) and the several persecutions
like the Tatsunokuchi Persecution on September 12th, 1271: When he
was almost going to be beheaded a shining object appeared in the night sky
saving him. Because the authorities feared the mystic event, they decided to do
not kill Nichiren Daishonin but rather sent him in exile to Sado Island. There,
as the documentarist explains, Nichiren Daishonin endured living in a small hut
in the middle of the snow and suffering extreme poverty far away from his
believers. In the end, Nichiren Daishonin culminated his life with the
Dai-Gohonzon inscribed on October 12th, 1279. This is the core
object of worship in Nichiren Shoshu and after Nichiren Daishonin’s death on
October 13th, 1282, it was inherited by Second High Priest Byakuren
Ajari Nikko Shonin (1246-1333). The next part of the documentary explains the
creation of the Head Temple Taiseki-ji (1290) in Mt. Fuji thanks to the
believer Nanjo Tokimitsu (1259-1332). A special attention is given to the
Five-Storied Pagoda. The documentary ends with the concept of Kosen-rufu: The
worldwide believers called Hokkeko have the wish of spreading Nichiren Shoshu
throughout the world. I am looking forward that this video eventually has subtitles
in English since it is extraordinary. Also I must say that the documentarist
put a lot of motivation to make the story vivid and she sort of reminds me to
the video game character Yuna from Final Fantasy X.
